I grew up influenced by my own father’s strong commitment to community service. While I enjoy the helping role that dentistry offers, I was truly excited by one of our patients describing a growing community project they were involved in.
The latest project I have had the honour to be consulted on and support, is the Salaama Vocational Education Center Limited, in Lyantonde, Uganda. This school was built thanks to the generosity of a Canadian private donation and is changing lives. This new vocational school is intended to train young adults ages 16 to 28 who would not have had a chance for post-secondary education due to their vulnerable circumstances.
My mission with this project is to help create a dental clinic within the space to treat and educate the students and staff with respect to their oral health. The eventual goal would involve self-sufficiency in the clinic and/or vocational training in the dental field.
As part of this goal, I have been researching the best way to transport dental materials and tools overseas without spoilage or damage. In my research I encountered several interesting options, including the DentaidBox. This innovation allows even the most remote communities gain access to pain relieving dental treatment with the benefit of wheels for mobility.
